to Yellow Plum (in blue
china bowl):

     afternoon's slit of sun slips
     between thick curtains
     & woos you to ripeness.

     it chooses you
     not for flecks of honey-russet
held low in your seam of shadows,
     nor your symmetry & swell;
     but because

     you slink in shade, sink
     behind green pear & clementine

     & cannot hide
     from each spear of light
     that ricochets
     through--

     even now
     nested warm
     against these lips

     even now:
     a tea-stain stone
     hugging close
     the trashbin floor.

:bulletyellow: A fruity poem worth reading: Swollen Cherry by =angelStained

EDIT: Oh gee, thank you so much! I was down with a fever for most of yesterday, so seeing this is more than enough consolation for this dang cold. This poem felt like a 'breakthrough' of sorts for me, so I'm really happy that it was chosen. What more can I say than: VIVE LA POESIE!

edit(2): wanted to fix the end for a while, finally decided to get it done with. I think it's better, not sure if I should've just cut out the last two strophes.

Thank you. :) I'd be curious to know why it reminded you of that, if you can still remember. Who is the artist, do you know?

The painting is by Johannes Vermeer, a Dutch artist. I have always admired his work for its beautiful depictions of light. He often painted light streaming in from windows, and the shadows it formed. He also often used simple and muted yet strong colors.

When I read your poem, I got a very strong sense of light, and the way it made the scene you described even more beautiful, and its movement throughout the room (which you describe as a "ricochet"). I also liked the colors you described ("blue china," "honey-russet,"), and they made a strong impression on me.

Ah, thank you for that. I only know him for his 'Girl With the Pearl Earring', but you've made me want to explore more of his work. I do see now what you meant by the comparison, and I really appreciate seeing your approach to the poem. :)

I found a recommendation of your poem on: Kneeling Glory's page.

I'm always amazed when poems such as this are birthed from everyday scenes or scenarious. To paint such a still life with words has me in awe. A plum in a fruit bowl inspired you! One may think it would be very difficult to make such a scene exciting, yet you had me scanning the lines again and again!

Your choice of punctuation (IE: semi colon use and ampersant) as well as language is exquisite. "woos you into ripening",

Great rhythm here: afternoon's slit of sun slips between thick curtains

I love the parts at the end in italics....

Just a wonderfully solid piece here!! So glad I found it.
